Advertisement Analysis
Directions:
1) With your partner, examine the advertisement you've been assigned. Look for the following literary elements:
simile
metaphor
allusion
analogy
personification
hyperbole
irony
symbolism
pun
double entendre
dysphemism
euphemism
2) On a sheet of paper, define the elements that are present in your advertisement. Use the glossary.
3) Identify where each element occurs in your text. Write down the location ("In the left corner... Under the...")
4) Consider the effect or function of each element. Google and research if necessary. Does it produce another element? Does it create an analogy? Does it produce shock? Humor?
5) What assumptions about life, the product, AND potential consumers does the advertisement make? Does it make assumptions about men? About women? Etc.
6) Be prepared to share your large paragraph-sized analysis with the rest of the class.
