Christian Edgar 1827-1897

Christian Edgar, born 17 November 1827, at Moffat and baptised at Harthope. Died 22 January 1897, at 29 Rose Street, Inverness, Scotland. married Alexander Campbell of Scotland.

The following (portions) of a poem was written after her death. Parts of the paper have deteriorated with age.

Alas! 'tis hard to quell our grief,

Or stem the rising tear,

When death's relentless hand is laid

On one, to us so dear.

A faithful wife, a mother fond,

A friend through good or ill,

Has left a vacant place on earth

No mortal flesh can fill.

We'll sadly miss her counsel wise,

When troubled or distressed;

Her sympathy and timely aid,

When by some hardships press'd.

With Christian patience she endured

The pains that on her fell,

And meekly bow'd to her dear Lord,

Who doeth all things well.

E'en when she saw that death was near,

Self did not fill her mind,

Her latest thoughts were centred in

The dear ones left behind.

We stood around her to the end,

In sympathy and love;

We saw Heav'n's light break on her face,

Her soul had gone above.

With her we could not farther go,

We could not yet pass ...

The dark dividing line ...

The bright eternal sh...

Doth fail to see her ...

Or mortal ear to hear ...
