Edmund and Bessie's first child, Douglas Bernard Widdows, was born 8 February 1921. Not long after their son was born, another opportunity knocked on the door for Edmund and he commenced as the first employee of Motor Spares, which later became a very large company. "Bernie" married Dulcie May Davey on 15 October 1947 and they had 7 children. Bernie is practical rather than artistic; skilled with his hands - good cabinet maker although not by trade. He was a taxi proprietor. Bernie served in New Guinea with AIF.

Douglas died 17 March 1995, Bendigo, Victoria.
