Thomas Hope

1840-1908

Thomas Hope was the fourth child and second son to Thomas and Alice Hope, being born in 1840 at Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland.

According to Scottish Naming Tradition, the second-born son was named after his maternal Grandfather and according to our Family History records, this was the case for Thomas - he was named after Thomas Armstrong.

The 1841 Census Return noted that David was living with his family at East Lodge, Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland - which is the Gamekeepers Lodge, at Kailzie House, Peeblesshire.

The 1851 Census Return, recorded David' as a "scholar" aged 11 and living with his family at 83 Castle Street (AKA Castlegate), Jedburgh.

When the family arrived in Australia in 1856, young Tom was 16 years of age and his occupation was simply listed as "labourer" on the Immigration document. Seek as I have, I've been unsuccessful in locating anything else about Thomas' life; apart from the odd mention here and there as part of reminiscences for the Hope boys in general, that is Richmond, William, David and Tom, who either shared lodgings for a while or lived in close proximity to each other. (see sections for Richmond and William for these references)

Thomas, who remained a bachelor, died 2 August 1908 at Powers Creek, in far Western Victoria and is buried at the Edenhope Cemetery. He lived in South Australia for 12 years and in Western Victoria for his remaining 39 years.

NOTE: see the page "Arrival at Hynam" for information about the land that Thomas & his brothers bought &/or lived on, as it appears that often they bought parcels of land between them.
