Halbert (Sonny) Edgar Hope was born 3 July 1879 at Fernside near Apsley to Richmond Armstrong Hope and Isabella Edgar. It seems that Sonny was named after his maternal grandfather, Halbert James Edgar. He was the second child and first son to Richmond and Isabella.

Records show that he was a labourer before he died from a central abscess and meningitis, on 16 February 1910 at Harrow, Victoria, where he is also buried.
