John Edgar 1821-1880

John Edgar, born 3 February 1821 at Harthope, Moffat. About the year 1857 he went to East Park, Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire, which farm he subsequently acquired. He married on 23 January 1847, at Lakehead, Kirkmahoe, Janet Kirkpatrick of Lakehead. Mrs Edgar died 24 March 1896, aged 70 years, at Redlands, Dumfries.

John Edgar died on 12 October 1880, at Pine Hills, Victoria. He had lived for 4 years in Victoria, 7 years in Queensland, 10 years in New Zealand and 9 Years in New South Wales before his death in Victoria. He is buried in the Pine Hills Cemetery. They had issue three sons and five daughters.

(A) Henrietta Edgar, born 20 February 1850 at East Park. married 29 November 1870 at East Park, John Swan Armstrong (born 6 March 1841, at Auchencairn and died 9 August 1917 at Lochside). She died 8 July 1882 at Acrehead, Dumfries. They had issue four sons.

(1) John Edgar Armstrong, born 24 September 1871 at Townhead. married 18 December 1917, Isabella Kirk and they have two daughters

(2) Henry Swan Edgar Armstrong, born 12 March 1875, married in November 1920, Elizabeth Campbell Williamson. He died 27 August, 1924 at Dumfries. Mrs Armstrong died 9 December 1931 at Adelaide, South Australia. Issue a daughter.

(3) James Alexander Armstrong, born 18 October 1876, died 27 July 1914, unmarried.

(4) William Copland Armstrong, born 4 July 1882, died 28 April 1927. unmarried

(5) Jessie Armstrong, died in infancy

(6) Jessie Armstrong, married in 1909 to John Smith

(B) David Edgar, born 3 December 1851, at Auchencairn, Kirkmahoe. Educated at Hutton Hall School, Caerlaverock. Farmed East Park in succession to his father. Appointed a Justice of the Peace, Dumfries County, 1909. Advisor to the Scottish Agricultural Board, 1912. He married in 1895 at Tinwald Shaws, Dumfriesshire, Hannah Todd. Hannah died on 1 November 1914 at Glasgow. David died on 19 May 1927 at Newfield, Caerlaverock. They had issue an only child.

(1) John Edgar, born 17 December 1895, at East Park. Educated at Hutton Hall School and Dumfries Academy. he farmed East Park for his father. Served in the H. L. I. Great War and was killed at Ypres 17 March 1918. unmarried

(C) Jane Edgar, born 1856 at Auchencairn. Died at her residence "Braemar", Palmerston, New Zealand on 19 May 1937, unmarried.

(D) Walter Edgar, born 29 August 1859, at Auchencairn, Kirkmahoe. Educated at Hutton Hall School. Farmer in Newfield, Caerlaverock. he died 23 May 1919 at Dumfries. unmarried

(E) George Edgar, born March 1861 and died 15 May 1961, aged two months, at Auchencairn.

(F) Margaret Edgar, born 1862, at East Park, Caerlaverock. Died at Redlands, Dumfries, 7 October 1897, unmarried

(G) Jessie Edgar, born 11 August 1863 at East Park. married James Cassels on 24 June 1904 at Dumfries. She died without issue on 19 April 1929, at Anchotlee, Midlothian.

(H) Mary Ann Edgar, born 28 November 1866, at East Park. married at Dumfries on 4 August 1890, Robert Semple (died 6 May 1924, at Glasgow). She died 16 May 1914 at GreystoneBank, Dumfries. They had issue one son and one daughter.

(1) Andrew Ronald Edgar, born 3 May 1902, who took over East Park after the death of his cousin, John Edgar in 1918. He married Elsie Austin and had issue two sons.

(2) Janet Marjorie Kirkpatrick Edgar (Dr. Marjorie Day, M.B., Ch.B. Edinburgh, 1922). She resides at "The Hobby", Maidstone, Kent, married on 4 November 1924, in London, William Day of Maidstone. They had issue three sons
